Turtle watching – Egg-laying

From November to February, the Caretta sea turtles come to lay eggs in the lagoon. It is one of the most important spawning spot in the South Pacific.

We invite you to come and observe them with the specialized teams of the Nouméa lagoons Aquarium and the Bwära Marine Turtles association, who work all year round to preserve the species and monitor the nesting sites.
The eco-guards will welcome you at the Bourail Tourist Office from 8pm. After a briefing and discovery activities for adults and children, you will then be invited to go, with your personal vehicle, to the transit parking where shuttles will be waiting to accompany you to the laying place.

The observation will be supervised and led by eco-guards, who will give you precious explanations of this extraordinary natural phenomenon.

At the end of the activity, you will be accompanied to your personal vehicle.

On presentation of proof: PMR/PH, over 60 years old, Students, Civic service, Groups of over 10 persons.

Tickets are nonrefundable. Dates can be modified exceptionally up to 3 days before the prestation and upon availability.
Egg-laying and spawning are distinct activities and need separated tickets.
No refund can be required in case of no laying or spawning observation, no-show of the visitor or if he decides to shorten the service

The average duration is 3 hours and requires at least 30 minutes of walking on the beach. It is therefore not suitable for young children and people with mobility difficulties.

The use of personal vehicle is necessary to get to the transit parking.

Based on the behavior of animals in their natural environment, the observation of laying and spawning cannot be guaranteed. Turtles are protected species. They cannot be approached or handled freely and the number of people is limited to 50 visitors per day. Approaching less than 10 meters from nests or disturbing turtles (lights, dogs, etc.) is punishable by a fine of 180,000 FCFP (art 240.3 and 240.9 of the CEPS).
